Relapse of Health

Relapse of Health

The month of June was pretty constant for me. I was living without roommates in my house; working full time, preparing all of my meals and going to yoga 6-7 times per week. The positive insight I gained from books, yoga, and self-reflection left me feeling healthier than ever! July came around to throw off my routine with three adventures to Colorado, Nevada, and Florida. During the first week of July, I found myself driving to my home in Ft. Worth wondering how I could best lead a group of high-school students on a spiritual excursion through mountain and metropolis alike. I packed backpacking gear and jumped in a van with the youth group from Southside – my church alma mater. On the trip, I realized how different I appeared to everyone today who knew me back when I was in the youth group. My health-centered lifestyle is now a prominent aspect of my life; my food choices, exercise, physical and mental self-awareness included. During the prior month of living alone, I hadn’t received any commentary or feedback on my lifestyle choices. I was taken off-guard to see people react to how “weird” my lifestyle-of-late is. I chose not to feel uncomfortable though; rather, I felt confident in the choices I have been making (all by myself!). Throughout the trek up a mountain and through the streets of Denver, I got to know some really great people. They were great because I felt comfortable being myself around them. It was a fantastic week, and I miss the bonds I formed! My father and sister reside in Las Vegas, Nevada....
Progress: Self-Inquiry

Progress: Self-Inquiry

About a month’s worth of my progress in a Headstand (Sirsasana). Great news! Next Sunday, I will be headed to Colorado with the youth group from my church back home for Dry Bones! I went on this trip when I was a sophomore in high school and I absolutely loved it. It’s a great experience; combining Trek and a mission trip. I am so excited to have the opportunity to go into the mountains and enjoy God’s creation, as well as be without my phone to really self-reflect on how I’m doing. So I have the Passion Planner that let’s me choose a focus for each week. I declared last week to focus on myself. And through that focus, I’ve decided that “self-inquiry” is not something people do often, but I am becoming more and more curious about it as I continue my yoga journey. I never really heard the term until I started doing yoga, and now it’s something that has become a recent interest, and aid to my “balanced” lifestyle! I had heard phrases such as “listen to your body,” “it’s just you and your mat,” and “become aware of different things going on in your body” and it was difficult for me to understand at first. I realized that until now, I never really was consciously aware of my body! I just lived and looked outward most of my day. Sitting down on my mat, focusing on only my breathing, and letting go of all outside thoughts before beginning a yoga class is one of the most powerful experiences I’ve had. We are such BUSY people,...

(The First Ever) International Day of Yoga

First of all, time is going by so quickly! I can’t believe it has been six months since I started my internship. So much has happened!! Short recap: I completed my internship and was extended  an offer of employment after I graduate. I accepted! I am looking forward to beginning my career at KPMG in Fort Worth with great people. I returned to Abilene mid-March and immediately started working full time in Accounts Payable and joined an auditing class.  I also took my very first graduate accounting class in a three-week Maymester. It was intense, but I decided not to work and focus on the class and relax a little bit. All of this really seems like a blur though, because I was also going through a break-up, and trying to grasp that I don’t know the plan for my life like I thought I did. Now I am here, three weeks into summer vacation. I have been working in Abilene and taking an online class.  I’ve mostly been going to work, cooking, exercising, going to yoga classes, and watching a lot of Netflix (oh and homework). I am enjoying learning easy, quick recipes for lunch since I only have an hour and don’t want to eat out. I have been loving salads! I buy the mixed greens from the produce section, and top it with avocado, cucumber, tomato, black beans, nuts, or bean sprouts, depending on what I have. I also have been making my own dressing versus using bottled. My roommate showed me a recipe that is simply dijon mustard, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and a little...
